Northeastern Pennsylvania, commonly referred to as NEPA, is one of the most beautiful regions in the state. From incredible scenery to delicious local cuisine, NEPA is truly a place you’d be lucky to call home. Whether you’re just passing through or a native looking for something fun and exciting to do this weekend, here are some of the best places in NEPA to take the family.

Outdoor Adventure

Something that makes NEPA so special is the amount of parks in the area. One of the most popular outdoor points of interest is the Seven Tubs Natural Area in Wilkes-Barre. The area, often referred to as simply “The Tubs”, features two waterfalls and 500 acres of hiking land. The Tubs is an especially popular swimming hole during the summer months, and on any given warm day you’ll find people splashing in the stream in swimsuits and flip flops. Another popular destination is Hickory Run State Park, which features the famous Boulder Field, an 18-acre field of rocks that continues to be the park’s most visited site. Ricketts Glen State Park, Kirby Park, and the Back Mountain Trail are also popular outdoor spaces that everyone should visit at least once while in NEPA. In the winter months when it’s too cold to venture outdoors, there are tons of ways you can still stay active, whether it’s taking group fitness classes or just getting in a solo workout at the gym.

NEPA has no shortage of awesome restaurants to choose from, and there is truly something to suit every taste. Pizza is a big deal in NEPA, with Old Forge being the self-proclaimed “Pizza Capital of the World.” You can find a pizzeria on almost every corner in NEPA, with Angelo’s, Gerry’s, Arcaro & Genell, and Sizzle Pi being some of the most beloved. Aside from pizza, NEPA also has an abundance of family-owned restaurants that can only be found here, including Mariano’s La Puccia in Exeter, Majestic Lunch in Pittston, and New Amber in Moosic. For all you foodies out there, NEPA is a great place to grab a bite with the family and taste some true local cuisine that you won’t find anywhere else!

Historic Sites

NEPA is a region rich in history, so it should come as no surprise that there are tons of historic sites and attractions to visit in the area. One of the most prominent attractions in the area is the Lackawanna Coal Mine Tour, which allows you to venture down a coal mine shaft 300 feet underground. The Coal Mine Tour is one of the most commonly visited attractions in NEPA, as it is an important part of the region’s history. Another historic site in NEPA is the Nathan Denison House, the former residence of a famous pioneer settler in the 1700s. To this day, the house remains looking as it did in the 1790s, and visitors can walk through the house and observe all of the same furnishings that Nathan Denison himself picked out.

If you and your family are lucky enough to call NEPA home, then you know just how unique and exciting the area is. If you’re just visiting, then be sure to check out some of these points of interest, and grab a slice of true NEPA pizza while you’re at it!
